Accidental Bride

Voices; there were many of them in your head, but their words made no sense. It was not the most comforting feeling you had ever felt, but at least you were not alone in the void of inexistent dreams. You honestly had no idea of how long the stasis of your mind had lasted, but it seemed like ages had passed by ever since you had the chance to open your eyes.

You had tried to make sense of what was going on; you really tried. However, waking up to the expectant looks of a bunch you did not know was not precisely the most reassuring welcoming you could have ever asked for. Not to mention the unsettlement you experienced by finding yourself in an unknown place.

“She’s waking up!”

Seeing the faces of those strangers, practically hovering above you with curious expressions, unsettled and flustered you to the point you nearly took off running, screaming. It was not every day you woke up to this peculiar sight.

“The newcomer!”

Hands hovering over your face, you had tried to cover your eyes from the glare of the blinding light. You still felt light-headed, weightless, confused and lost. “Where am I?” Your voice was a bit hoarse, face pulled in a grimace. The pain in your eyes faded when the curtain of silver light disappeared, and was replaced by the friendly expression of an elderly woman, who was accompanied by a party of younger people.

She merely smiled, brown eyes full of warm hospitality. “Welcome to the Soul Society, (Name).”

After a much needed explanation about how in the world you had gotten there, in the first place, there was nothing much you could do in the middle of the night. It was incredible, true, but even in the world of spirits one had to catch up some sleep, sometimes. You were also amazed to see women with small children, families and such. It was a revelation to you to see that life on the other side did not differ that much than that you used to have before you… well, you were not sure how to call it. Were you even dead? You honestly did not remember much of the circumstances which led you to this place but there was one thing you were sure of; they had been dramatic.

The Human World was a dangerous place to dwell, but so was the Soul Society. You had been lucky to end up in a decent district, since there were others easily comparable with the slums in where criminality was something to be feared.

And here you had thought you were in Paradise, you mused as you scrubbed the floor of the house. Were souls not supposed to be wearing halos over their heads, and playing the harp on white and fluffy clouds? Either way, be it in this world or the next, being one of the youngest, and newest, around surely had its downsides. It meant that you had to do the work others did not want to. But even if it was a bit odd living with a bunch you did not know, you managed just fine, except for those times you felt a bit lonely.

And there was Yachiru; the little girl that would always call you Mom. It had been difficult, at first, to understand why she would be so attached to you all of a sudden to you, a stranger who she had never seen in her life. That was your opinion, at least, but she seemed to be very convinced that you were her Mother and there was no way you could make her think otherwise. Some people had even been amazed at her preferential treatment for you as she, apparently, was comparable with a devil— which you thought had to be an exaggeration. She could not possibly be as scary as the tall and imposing Shinigami with a patch on his eye, right?

Zaraki had seemed reluctant to let Yachiru anywhere near you, at first. You could not blame him, though. He held her dear to him, and one could think he was like a Father to her. If anything, she was like his daughter and he certainly would feel upset if there was an outsider who threatened to steal part of her love and attention she had for him. There had been attempts from him to try and keep you away from her but in the end the pink-haired child always got it her way. Her insistence had truly surprised you as much as it had surprised him and, eventually, you both had to come to an agreement concerning the matter.

In some way, the child had grown on you ever since you met her, which was something nearly everyone was shocked about. Again, it had been those who had been scared out of their wits because of her. They said there was nothing worse than the tyranny of a spoiled child, who was the protégée of the 11th Kenpachi of the 11th Division. If she was known to be Zaraki’s unofficially adopted daughter, then you had to be Yachiru’s unofficial Mother. Of course, the rumor spread quite fast and soon there was the assumption that you were Zaraki’s bride— the current Kenpachi’s bride, no less! Zaraki and you had not been quite satisfied with the outcome, but Yachiru seemed happy with it. In fact, she was enthusiastic about the idea of you becoming Zaraki’s wife and she had even dropped some not-so-subtle hints about that. Little Yachiru said she wanted him to become her Father for real, and you had not known what to do about her request.

Only time could tell, you believed, but you still felt a little unsure. For one, Yachiru always tried to set you up on a ‘date’ with him, which usually ended up in awkward moments of silence and confusion. However, the more they happened the more used to the idea you seemed to get— or as used as you could ever get to the idea of a child who called you Mom and a male whom almost everyone thought was your soon-to-be husband. It was true Zaraki had intimidated you, at first, but in time you discovered that he was a soul of honor and really caring for those he held dear.

Honestly, the only conclusion you could draw from this was that they were a misunderstood duo— one that you had come to appreciate and cherish.

It was one of those days when they dropped by your house— more like the house you lived in. Yachiru was latched on Zaraki’s back, as usual, and when she spotted you sweeping the front of your dwelling her face changed into a bright smile. The girl could be sweet at times, when she felt like it, if only because she thought you were her long gone Mother— one she had not seen in years. The only thing Zaraki knew about her Mother was that she had died not long before he found the little girl, all alone, in one of the most dangerous districts of the Spirit World and. Ever since then, they had been really close and it had only been she and him until you came along and while it was true he had been reluctant to accept that she needed a Mother, he could now understand just how much Yachiru needed to believe that you were her Mom.

“Mom!” You saw her wave at you, a cheerful look on her face as the man who carried her shook his head in mild amusement. “We were passing by, and I asked Ken-chan if we could come to see you. I also wanted to ask you to come with me and play for a while, please?”

More than the childish monster everyone seemed to see in her, to you, she was child-like. Well, she practically was a child and it greatly surprised you that she held such a respectable position in the Shinigami association and, even more, that she was Zaraki’s second in command. You could see the trust he had in her. There was not a single moment he ever doubted of her capabilities in the battlefield. She could be a very fierce opponent, and many had come to fear and respect her.

You greeted her, feeling rather happy to see her and Zaraki. It really warmed your heart seeing her with him in such a nice day. You noticed the Kenpachi’s green eyes bore into yours, a slightly humored expression on his face. The sun shone bright against his raven hair and, as he stood before you, there was something in his gaze you could quite not place. However, your trail of thought was interrupted as soon as Yachiru hopped from his shoulders and to your arms, giggling all the while.

“I want to show you my new addition to my collection of toys.” She beamed at you, clearly anxious at the prospect of spending some time with you. Sadly, you could not afford doing that right now. As tempting as the invitation sounded, there still was a lot of work to do around, and you had to get it done.

You opened your mouth to speak, ready to explain. “I’d like to but—”

“It’s not a problem, (Name)! Of course you’re free to go!” The voices of your companions came out of nowhere, and you turned around to see them hiding behind a random… bush? What were they even doing there in the first place?! You almost jumped out of your skin at the sight of their expectant faces, but mostly for the expression of dread when Yachiru’s glare was directed at them. However, as soon as they told you that you were free for the evening, she beamed with rosy cheeks, clinging onto you as you stood there with a dumbfounded face.

This little girl was something.

Zaraki shook his head, and chuckled at the amusing scene unfolding before him. He might have not understood things clearly, as of yet, but if there could be someone who could provide a motherly figure for his precious Yachiru, he did not think he could be wrong when he thought about you.

so, Yachiru's mother died a long time ago, and now she thinks that the reader is her mother. Does that mean that the mother has been reborn as the reader, or am I just thinking to hard about it. It's just that the whole reborn things was mentioned in the first chapter.

I realy like the story so far, and I just wanted to ask, although I will probably get the answer if i botherd to read the next chapter :)
